In December 1840, HRH Prince Albert visited the Polytechnic Institution. Following his visit, he agreed to become patron and thus began a long history of royal patronage.
 
In this online exhibition, we explore our links with HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family over the course of our 184-year history.

Timeline of Royal Patronage

1840 – Prince Albert becomes patron of the Royal Polytechnic Institution

1863 – Edward, Prince of Wales becomes patron of the Royal Polytechnic Institution
 
1912 – King George V and Queen Mary become patrons of the Regent Street Polytechnic

1952 – Queen Elizabeth II becomes patron of the Regent Street Polytechnic and later Polytechnic of Central London

1992 – Queen Elizabeth II consents to continue as patron of the now University of Westminster
