After an academic year like no other, we thought it would be helpful to provide an update on the services that University Records and Archives are providing from September 2021

In-person visits to our collections

Both the University Archive and the Westminster Menswear Archive are now open by to visitors but are operating at reduced capacity. As a result, we are asking everyone to book an appointment in advance. This includes both members of the public and University of Westminster staff and students. Appointments can be booked by emailing archive@westminster.ac.uk or mensweararchive@westminster.ac.uk, depending on which items you would like to see.

Advice on researching with archives (for University of Westminster staff and students)

We are happy to provide University of Westminster staff and students with guidance and advice about researching in archives elsewhere, including information on which collections are open for research, and online resources.  You can either contact us by email, or book an online appointment with Senior Archivist, Anna McNally, via the Engage system. We ask students to please use their University email address to contact us, and to let us know which course you are studying so that we can provide the best support possible.

Teaching Support (University of Westminster only)

The University Archive and Westminster Menswear Archive can provide tailored sessions for students to help develop collections-based research skills. We can bring a small selection of materials to classes on any campus; we can also offer online sessions or pre-recorded videos as part of a blended learning approach. Please see the Teaching With Our Collections page for more information and get in touch using the email addresses above to discuss your requirements with a member of the team.

Research Skills sessions (online)

We are offering online Research Skills again this year, bookable through the University’s Engage platform. Sessions being offered in Semester 1 are:

  • Getting Started with Archival Research
  • Using Digital Archive Resources Critically
  • An introduction to Personal Digital Archiving

Please check Engage for dates, and to register for the sessions. If you are unable to attend any of the dates, get in touch to enquire about receiving a recording.

You can also find advice on these topics through our online guides.

Digital Collections

We are regularly adding digital material to our online catalogue – this includes both digitised versions of physical records, and records that were created digitally (‘born-digital’). Our two largest digitised collections – the Polytechnic Magazines and the Polytechnic Touring Association Archive are also still available.

Records Management

University staff should check the Offsite Storage intranet pages for details of current arrangements.
